Art Director – Pilot
Asst. Art Director – Season 1
In this HBO series, three thirtysomething friends living in San Francisco explore the exciting, sometimes overwhelming, options available to a new generation of gay men. Director Andrew Haigh sought to capture an authentic Bay Area sense of place. Our role in the art department was quick-moving and adaptive. The pilot was filmed on location to build a documentary aesthetic, and key locations were recreated on a sound stage in Season 1.
The story of Harvey Milk and his struggles as an American gay activist who fought for gay rights and became California’s first openly gay elected official. Sets were often matched to archival photos and video; my job was to research these images and objects and locate them for sets recreating the life of Harvey Milk.
Based on a painting by Mark Stock of the same name, The Butler’s In Love tells the story of a forbidden romance at an absinthe-fueled dinner party in 1912. Filmed in 3D using a Kernercam stereoscopic camera.
Drama centered on the romance between Ernest Hemingway and WWII correspondent Martha Gellhorn, Hemingway’s inspiration for For Whom the Bell Tolls. The set decoration department took painstaking care to accurately recreate sets varying in period from 1920s Spain to 1940s Shanghai to 1960s Idaho. Image research, documentary footage + vintage catalogues guided my quests for lighting, fabrics, furniture, art + other decoration to recreate locales around the world.
